The internet is not a family friendly place. Very young children have access to the internet and may easily access adult or mature content. A system to categorize internet content could address this problem by blocking web pages and images that are unsuitable for young children.
Right now, we are developing such a standard. It will restrict access to (parts of) websites that are of unsuitable categories, taking into account one's age and legal jurisdiction. This protection mechanism will reside in the webbrowser, making it a generalised easy-to-adopt solution that is available for all websites at a global scale. Website owners only need to specify the categories of the content on their website and this standard will do the rest. And the fact that different nations have different laws is also abstracted away by this standard. Below are some of the offered features:
For children:
• Filtering out inappropiate content.
• Unaffected by VPN's or proxy's.
• Prevents dark patterns by websites.
For adults:
• Avoid uploading your ID to untrusted websites/apps.
• Manage exclusions for the content filter.
For website owners:
• Very easy to set up with minimal effort.
• Automated confirmation of acceptable age available.
• Reduce legal risk exposure trough following an industry standard.
• No extra risk of data leaks, hacks or DDoS oppertunities.
For governments:
• Specify an age-limit per content category according to local laws.
• Remotely add a nation-wide age limit for uncooperative websites.
• Minimal infrastructure needs, cost-effective solution.
